An Inspiring Photographer.

One site I read regularly is the Digital Journalist. This site is the real thing, working photographers in real situations. I found this clip of a photographer named David Alan Harvey, a new name to me but a real star in the world of photojournalists and street photography. Here is the introduction by Dirck Halstead, the main guy behind the Digital Journalist;

David Alan Harvey is a photojournalist's photojournalist. His work is in the tradition of Henri Cartier-Bresson and W. Eugene Smith. He never uses a press card or long lens. He never stands behind ropes at a "photo op." He tends to use a single Leica body with either a 35mm or 50mm lens. He has the eye of painter and the soul of a poet. He is the kind of photographer I would like to be.

To see what he is talking about go here and enjoy this photographer and his work. Just a technical note, it is interesting to see he does not use a lens hood on at least one of his Leica outfits......another rule made to be broken !

Surreal HCB & the Smithsonian Magazine

The "Indelible Images" feature each month in Smithsonian Magazine is a wonderful feature for photographers and people interested in the "story" of a famous photograph. Despite Mr. Winogrand saying that a photograph doesn't tell a narrative, there is a story behind every great picture.
In this months issue the feature is one of HCB's more surreal pictures and the interesting story behind it. The piece also talks about HCB's new book, it seems almost as good as looking at his contact sheets and watching him edit a days take.

Winogrand & Meyerowitz do "Street Photography"

I'm sure by now many of you have seen the Winograd video that is making the rounds. I watched it and was fascinated by his technique on the streets, he just ignores everyone and his movements with the camera border on ADHD. What he says about his photography and his pictures is very interesting too, I like the statement that a picture is nothing but light on shape.

I also was reminded of the Joel Meyerowitz street photography video that made the rounds some time back. The contrast in styles is great. They seem to be polar opposites in presence and interaction with the street.

which is the greater artist, photographer? Which will leave the biggest impact? Which has the most beat up Leica?
