The Wildcat roster lists 9 players at 6'2" or better, this height advantage and ball control held the Turks to a 17 - 4 first period deficit. The Turks surged back in the second half winning both periods, tying the score late in the fourth before a final Wildcat surge of a 3 point shot and free throws took the game. The Turks VandenEkart brothers combined for 33 points in the Conference matchup.

A bright spot, below, was the 140 pound class with Junior Kyle Weaver scoring a win by decision over Austin Koons, 2 - 1. Other Turk victories included Brittany Tabor, DJ McKenzie, pin, Taylor Comfort and Alex Dickinson.

Senior powerhouse Steven Leverette is out for the rest of the season and the Washington State Mat Classic in February. Leverette said,"I was hurt playing baseball, my therapist says I through with wrestling but I'm getting a second opinion".

The Cashmere "Dawgs" rolled into Sultan on Saturday afternoon mauling the Lady Turks 31 - 65 in a thankfully non-conference game. Senior, 5'9" Brandi Johnson fights the dogged Cashmere defenders in First Half action. Cashmere unleashed a fearsome defense that played "steal and score" all four quarters. The Turks were held scoreless in the third period. 5'10 Turk Junior Dani Markwood continued to lead the Turks with a team high 7 points and looking to the future, #21 Freshman Courtney Morris grabbed 8 rebounds. Ranchos de Taos, Taos, New Mexico. I shot this in the mid 1970's, I think. It was shot with a Leica M4 using Tri-X. I was prompted to find my version by a posting on The Online Photographer by Mike Johnston about this church as a photo subject. I knew about the church as a photo subject and knew that I had shot it as well when I was much younger. The thrust of the article was about how photographers see their subject in the real environment. I found my black and white print and scanned it to post here. It is as I shot it then, complete with the infamous power line at the top. My chance to be in great photographic company.

Sultan took a one point lead to the locker room at the half but were out scored in the second by the Warriors. 6'3" Turk Senior Sam Hatton was the other Turk in double digits with 22.

Turk Sophomore Keeper Korena Price rises to block one of many shots during the Sultan loss, 7 - 0, to powerhouse Archbishop Murphy on Thursday afternoon at Murphy's home field. At the half break, trailing 2 - 0 acknowledging the improved quality of play from the Turks, Assistant Coach Maura Raney said,"It looks like we are learning to want this". This sentiment was echoed by Turk Captain, Senior, Andi Hasting saying,"It looks like we are starting to play more as a team". Hasting's sat out this game after re-injuring her knee in last weeks match. The Turks played well into the first part of the second half but the Wildcats poured on the pressure scoring in the 44th, 65th, 66th, 69th and 74th minutes of play. Wildcats Alley Beck and Chole LaMarre each scored twice. The Turks fell to 0 - 4 and 0 - 5 overall.

Wally Armstrong, center, is the man on the grill at the monthly Saturday pancake breakfast at the East County Senior Center in Monroe. "I cook at the Snohomish Senior Center too, I get lots of practice",Wally said. He mixes the batter and plates the hot cakes to order. First time kitchen volunteer Anna Wilcox, right, is in charge of the egg orders. The other kitchen staff and dining room extend to the left. The monthly pancake breakfast is open to all with all proceeds going to the operating fund of the Senior Center.

I am familiar with the work of the photographer called Brassai, but recently came across a copy of the book "Brassai the Monograph" at my Monroe Branch of the Sno-isle Library and was enchanted once again. I was impressed by the width and depth of his art. The volume is filled with iconic photographs. He was a pioneering photographer who worked in other media, drawing, sculpture, painting. Brassai worked in the creative firestorm that was Paris in the '20's.

In the Monograph there are a series of essays and articles. One that particularly spoke to me was written by Brassai's good friend Henry Miller. In this essay Miller christened Brassai "The Eye of Paris". I really liked the opening paragraph of Millers essay;

"Brassai has the rare gift which so many artist despise - normal vision. He has no need to distort or deform, no need to lie or to preach. He would not alter the living arrangement of the world one iota; he sees the world precisely as it is and as few men in the world see it because seldom do we encounter a human being endowed with normal vision. Everything to which his eye attaches itself acquires value and significance, a value and significance, I might say, heretofore avoided or ignored. The fragment, the defect, the common-place - he detects in them what there is of novelty or perfection. He explores with equal patience, equal interest, a crack in the wall or the panorama of a city. Seeing becomes an end in itself, For Brassai is an eye, a living eye".

*Written by Henry Miller in 1933,"The Eye of Paris" was first published in the Chicago Globe in November 1937.

I really like, "Seeing becomes an end in itself".

Fairhaven Books

Very near Bellingham, WA is the community of Fairhaven, an old Puget Sound port city that has reinvented itself several times over the years. It is now an arts community with lots of galleries, artists, coffee houses, restaurants, textiles, shopping and parks. This is in Village Books, a large and well stocked bookstore in Fairhaven.

Bellingham Bikes

These were shot in Bellingham, WA, near the Canada border in Northwest Washington. Bellingham is the home of Western Washington University. Both the city and the university have a huge "outdoor" culture, with bikes being a big part of that. There are many bike racks around campus and many, many bikes in town at bakeries and cafes.

A Very Different HCB.

I had two Henri Cartier-Bresson encounters recently, the first was this very unusual picture postcard of a smiling HCB. I found the postcard at Bulldog News in Seattle, WA. This is rare because first it is a picture of Cartier-Bresson and he is smiling! I can't quite make out what camera he is holding and I love his belt buckle. It was taken by Martine Franck, his wife, in Normandie, France in 1970 sometime. The one, true master.

The second encounter came in the June, 2010 NPPA Magazine, Newsphotographer, reporting on a new DVD set of 11 color and black and white films about and by Henri Cartier-Bresson. The title is "Henri Cartier-Bresson:Collectors Edition". It is published by Arthouse Films. I'm looking forward to seeing it soon.

I just shot this ! I was sitting at my kitchen table reading web pages, looked out the door and saw this scene. I made the shot with my iPhone and processed it minimally, in Lightroom. Maybe the flare is a smudge on the lens or something but I really like the shot.

Jennifer Ramsey, age 11, holds a replica of the sign unveiled by the Washington State Department of Transportation at the intersection on SR 2 where her father was fatally injured in a motorcycle, car crash. Ms Ramsey is supported by her best friend Estelle Sather, 10. Sather holds a box of tissues that she distributed to some of the speakers at the unveiling on Thursday.

I bought a bike to ride around town in response to the BP well blow out in the Gulf. I have read that most of the auto fuel is used for trips under 5 miles around the home. That fits me as I visit my clients, the Library and the Sky River Bakery in Monroe, Washington. I was in photo school in Santa Barbara, California when that well blew and covered the beaches.

I was covering the Washington State Track and Field Meet at Mt. Tahoma High School in Tacoma, Washington for the Monroe Monitor Newspaper The weather was bad, rain, cold and very windy. Late on the last day the storm smoothed a bit and the light changed to something soft and lovely. These starting blocks were waiting at one curve in the track.

Photography is such a mystery to me sometimes. I shot this frame on the street because the crutches caught my eye and the blonds of course. The mystery part is this shot received over 2000 hits on my Flickr.com site and 3 people flagged it as "Favorites". Maybe it has to do with the title I gave the shot, but in any case, to all those viewers I say thank you. The shot was in downtown Seattle, WA.

Walker Evans Simple Secrets

I came upon a volume of Walker Evans photographs titled "Simple Secrets". It is the catalog of an exhibit of Walker Evans photographs from the Collection of Marian and Benjamin A. Hill shown at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, Georgia in 1998. Ellen Fleurov, Curator of Photography. The pictures are small and interesting and include some of his famous "Hidden Camera, Subway portraits". What I found most interesting was the Evan's quote that closed the volume.
